The Programmer Who Loved Me

Surprise Announcements from the Programmer (aka The Emerging Tech Conference)

Ahh, the exciting, spontaneous life of being married to a programmer. One minute you’re finished scheduling your week, then Wham!, he murmurs an offhand comment while squinting at his screen…leaving me blinking at my calender in horror and wondering if I have any whiteout left (because he mutters comments that tilt my world rather regularly).

So it seems I will be in Philadelphia next week…surprise, surprise. At some point the programmer signed up for the Emerging Technology Conference-a two day extravaganza featuring a smorgasbord of framework talks with catchy titles such as Battle of the Frameworks! How does one battle over frameworks? Do they use light sabers? Is the winner determined by who can code the fastest? Me, I’d take a laptop and just bonk them all over the head: I win! I win! I win! (oops, sorry, brief regression to childhood) .

I should have known not to start scheduling spring and summer fun without checking with the programmer. He tends to come out of his cave and go to programmer gatherings (aka conferences) when the weather warms. If only he would find scheduling software that was, well, perfect…but according to him such software doesn’t exist so he uses nothing (i.e. see previous post about perfectionism). So until such software exists (never gonna happen, sigh), I’ll be taking unexpected trips to Philadelphia…

P.S. It’s A Good Day For Linux

My programmer is happy. The following goodies got released or mentioned in the news (and now that I have discovered the intense, brain-melting joy of extreme information overload via an RSS aggregator) I get to jump up and down on the bed with the latest tidbits-essentially beating him to the scoop and waking him up early. I know, I’m a competitive, little witch.

Anyway:

IBM announced they’re going to support Ubuntu, and so the, may I say trend?, continues of big companies tiptoeing into the Linux sphere. The rest of the article talks about Lotus…when did Lotus come back? I swear I thought it died a silent death in the 90s.

A new version of Ubuntu is out. Yeah, it’s just a maintenance release. But I’m currently in love with Ubuntu, that is until I break something irrevocably in it and have a temper tantrum. Breaking things is my super power. I’ve been known to crash the Linux kernel, causing a look of wonder and awe to cross my programmer’s face.

Not the newest of news, but KDE 4.0 was released last week. It won’t be useful for me as 4.0 seems to be geared more to the cutting edge user at the moment (so not me, but I’m sure my programmer is already all over it).

Geeks Are Sexy

Put the words geek and sex(y) together and I’m instantly hooked. I did marry myself a hunky geek after all. GeeksaresexyTM is a site devoted to ‘tech, science, news and social issues for geeks’. Today’s front page looks like a dose of my daily life-offices (and a basement) crowded with multiple computers and piles of paper.

They have a compilation of female geeks-brains and beauty, baby! But what I was really looking for were geeks of the male variety. We can all look, just no touching (their software packages or, ahah, other more tangible packages).
