I’m not a religious person–my in-laws say all that higher education (aka the devil) sneakily usurped my faith. They pray for my re-enlightenment. What they should really do is make me watch thousands of advertisements. Sometimes, I swear, a mysterious entity, be it a he, she, or Jabba the Hut, sends me a miraculous eureka [...]

Sad News, We Have Lost One Of Our Own
Posted in personal, tagged Mad Asthmatic on January 21, 2009 | 1 Comment »
It is a sad time. Mad Asthmatic (aka Emma), a fellow blogger, who I ”met’ just a few months ago has passed away from a heart attack. I will miss her UK humor and phrases, her insight, her beautiful posts, and the good advice she always gave me. Her last post, No Regrets, is, sadly, [...]
Beer: The Other Fuel of Great Programmers

The programmer went to Belgium for the beer (and chocolate, but we’ve covered that). Technically, his employer thinks he went to Belgium for the Devoxx conference, but that was just a clever misdirect. He only went to the conference to ask the local programmers which of the approximately 500 Belgian beers they liked best. How [...]
The Fuel of Programming Champions: Belgian Chocolate

I love chocolate, the darker the better, add some nuts, citrus, or mint and double yum. I was definitely ready to visit some the family run, handcrafted goodness of the Belgium chocolatier shops that sprinkle every block of Brussels and Brugge.
On the otherhand, the programmer is ADDICTED to chocolate. As in:
“I can’t fix this bug [...]

I’m not one for resolutions. They typically sound glum and painful. Like last year’s actions were naughty and, channeling your inner chided child, you’re ‘resolving’ to be good this year while your subconscious fingers are crossed. Can you tell I have authority issues?
In a little vocabulary slight of hand, I’ve determined my New Year’s Goals. [...]
Love and a Racing Yacht

Okay, so I probably have the type of boat? ship? dingy? wrong and Lisa Ruff, a great friend of mine, will shake her head at me later for mucking up the technical aspect of her book. However, if you like romance, strong and smart characters, and the lure of racing on the ocean all in [...]
Belgium in a Pint Glass (Or Two or Five)

(You can check out a few of the thousand pictures I took on my trip to Belgium on Flickr.)
I didn’t expect to love Belgium. I admit, I was only going to Belgium because the Devoxx conference was there (i.e. a free hotel room), otherwise, I would have flown straight to Paris.
I’m so glad the programmer’s [...]
