Most good little writers are probably busy with character sketches and plot outlines for the November 1st NaNoWriMo start. I am not good and hate being called little. Me, I’m procrastinating for all I’m worth and much like a dieter who promises to start their low calorie regime tomorrow, I’m bingeing on what I’m going to miss during the thirty November days of type-until-my-fingerprints-are-obliterated.
What am I going to miss: Reading.
I can’t read books while in a nose-to-the-laptop writing phase because I have this nasty weakness of not being able to put a book down once I’ve started reading it. A book has to be truly horrendous for me to not finish it in one sitting. True, after reading a book, I may reflect on it and think it wasn’t great and the plot and characters will be forgotten in an hour, but if it is decent, I’m easily absorbed. End of chapter hooks and I are the very best of friends. Therefore no book reading for me in November, or I will quickly fall behind on my daily word count.

NaNoWriMo procrastination pile.
So what last minute treats are on my plate before the November 1st reading guillotine?
Wanderlust by Ann Aguirre The sequel to the already devoured Grimspace.
When Demons Walk by Patricia Briggs I’m a sucker for anything with Demon in the title.
Samurai Elf by Miguel Guerra and Suzy Dias A graphic novel I picked up because I just need to find out what or who a Rasta Cyborg Dwarf is.
Mysteria Lane by Mary Janice Davidson, Susan Grant, Gena Showalter, and P.C. Cast A paranormal anthology by some of my favorite authors. And, yes it includes more demons. Yum.
Moon Called by Patricia Briggs The first book in a series about a mechanic named Mercy Thompson.
The Complete Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Yes, that would be all 4 novels and 56 short stories. I try to read a classic at least once a month.
My only worry, that having read these books I still won’t be able to resist next week’s delivery. Before committing to NaNoWriMo, I did a little shopping and ordered Descartes’ Bones by Russell Shorto and D.C. Noir 2. I may have to get the programmer to hide them…of course, then I’ll be obsessed with finding them *sigh*. I’m also declaring a moratorium on reading book reviews. Via twitter, Mark Hayward declared that nobody should buy Seth Godin’s book Tribes. Telling me I shouldn’t do something is like waving a red flag in front of a mad bull. I immediately have to know why not, and I’m probably going to do it anyway (translation: I have authority issues). After reading Mark’s review, Tribes is definitely going on my To Buy list (but not because he hates the book, quite the opposite actually!).
What are you doing to get ready for NaNoWriMo? Not a psycho NaNoWriMoer, what do you do to keep yourself from giving into a temptation that hurts your goal?
Found your blog through chuck westbrook’s blog (because who needs to wait for suggestions!). as a fellow blogger and aspiring writer, i sympathize with and admire you! good luck with your novel writing…
you and I are SO ALIKE.
I even use that book binge phrasing.
Im ok if I know theres no JUNK FOOD IN THE HOUSE but I panic if there arent a few unread titles.
weird.
I know
Tobey, thank you so much for the encouragement. Best of luck to you with your writing, too, and thanks for visiting!
You want to know how BAD I am about having unread books in the house? I live one block from the library (and that definitely was a big plus when the programmer and I were house shopping) and I know on what days they put out the new titles.
My name is Anya, and I’m a bookaholic.
There you again with those Skilz <–not a real word.
Enjoy your weekend!
I’ve definitely got one skill; it’s called I giveth into temptation super fast! Couldn’t resist getting a copy of Tribes to add to the TBR pile (but I’ve only got 40 more pages to go *grin*).
